Residents Learn About New Energy Program

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) – The more you buy, the less it costs – it’s a saying most consumers go by.

Buying in bulk is how people save on items from toilet paper to dish soap, but buying electricity in bulk?

Elmira residents got the run down Monday on a new energy program called Community Choice Aggregation -where buying electricity in bulk can lower their electric bill.

Bulk purchasing is expected to save money for thousands of residents and small businesses.

Representatives of the Municipal Energy and Gas Alliance (MEGA) discussed the program with residents and small business owners.

If the city decides to aggregate, only the supply portion of your electric bill will change.  The delivery will still come from NYSEG and buying in bulk sets a fixed rate for customers. But that price is unknown until the city approves a local law which could happen this summer.

The Town of Horseheads, and villages of Burdett and Montour Falls are also exploring participation in a CCA.

Residents who don’t wish to participate are able to opt out if the city ultimately decides to start a CCA.
